Immediately prior to establishing XMS, Steve was manager of the XRD division of Robertson Research Minerals Ltd. His career history to date includes 2 years field-work in S.E. Asia and Australia as a petroleum geologist and 2 years as a geochemist/party chief responsible for offshore geochemical exploration surveys in the Barents Sea, Norwegian Sea and Atlantic Ocean. Whilst employed by Robertson Research International Ltd. he was involved in the co-ordination and management of both single-well and multi-well evaluation studies in the North Sea petroleum industry.

Steve is a Fellow of the Geological Society, an Associate of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, and a member of the British Crystallographic Association, the Mineralogical Society, the Clay Minerals Society and the Petroleum Exploration Society of Great Britain and regularly attends meetings, workshops and conferences related to XRD/XRF and Clay Mineralogy.

A keen cyclist and runner with a particular interest in mountain running, Steve regularly takes part in cross-country, mountain and road races throughout the UK.

Jonathan I. Wilkins - XRD Team Leader

BSc(Joint Hons) Chemistry & Earth Sciences, MSc Geochemistry

Jonathan joined the company in 2002. His main responsibilities include integration of XRD reports jointly with the Managing Director, quality control and unconventional projects. This includes, but is not limited to Rietveld Analysis, igneous and metamorphic minerals interpretation, synthetics, refractories, industrial minerals and aggregates.

Jonathan's previous experience includes over 13 years of technical support and customer training within the wireline logging industry, including nuclear and electrical logs and structural interpretation from acoustic and optical image logs. At MSc level his principal interest was in hard rocks, with a focus on analytical methods (XRD, XRF and Electron Microprobe), petrology and mineral relationships. He also makes petrographic sections in his home workshop and conducts research into pet projects relating to petrology and mineralogy encountered through field-work.

Jonathan is a member of the British Crystallographic Association and is a regular delegate at their Industry Group meetings. He is also a Fellow of the Geological Society, member of the Geologists' Association and founder-chairman of the North Wales Geology Association. He is a dedicated interpreter of the landscape through photography and field geology, with a special interest in the north-western parts of Britain and Ireland, and can often be found leading amateur geological excursions in North Wales.

Lorenza Sardisco - Geologist

PhD, MSc (Distinction), BSc (Hons), Geological Sciences FGS

Lorenza joined the company in 2014 as a geologist with particular responsibility for interpretation of XRD data, quantitative mineralogical analysis using the Rietveld method and normative analysis from bulk chemistry.

In 2017 she achieved her PhD in Earth Science with a thesis entitled “Integration of innovative mineral quantification techniques for improved analysis of hydrocarbon reservoir rocks”.

In 2008 she obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Geological Sciences with a thesis in mineralogy and completed her Master's Degree (with Distinction) in 2010 in Geological Sciences and Technologies, with an experimental thesis in mineralogy and crystallography at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia. Her previous work experience includes a position as laboratory researcher for the mineralogical analysis of clay and rock by XRD at the Geotechnologies Center of the University of Siena. During that time she was responsible for the geological interpretation of XRD patterns and was responsible for the installation and routine operation of the PANalytical X’Pert Diffractometer and the high temperature chamber.

During her career Lorenza has developed a detailed understanding of X-ray Diffraction (XRD) analysis, with a particular focus on clay minerals.

Lorenza has taken part in several courses including schools in the field of XRD, geochemistry and geology. She is a member of the North Wales Geology Association and a Fellow of the Geological Society.

Joanna Jones - Operations Manager & XRD Data Analyst

BSc(Hons) Geosciences

Jo is primarily responsible for the operational side of the laboratories, project management and customer liaison and also has a significant role in the interpretation of XRD data. She joined the Company in 2008 as a laboratory technician responsible for XRD and XRF sample preparation, experience which is valuable in assisting with the co-ordination of workflow management.

Jo has a wealth of managerial experience in the financial services and retail sectors and is extending her role within the business following her training in XRD data interpretation. In March 2009 she completed the Bruker XRD training school and in March 2011 she completed a Clay Mineralogy course at the Macauley Institute. Jo is fully conversant in the use of Traces software for the interpretation of XRD data and Search/Match and Siroquant software for the identification and quantification of mineral phases. She is also experienced with the operation of the XRD instrumentation used within the business.

Jo is instrumental in promoting the Company within the industry through attending exhibitions and conferences throughout Europe and the Middle East. She is a Fellow of the Geological Society and a member of the North Wales Geology Association.
